Aim for 25–40 grams of protein at each meal, spaced every 3–4 hours.
Before or After Your Workout
A high-quality protein meal or shake consumed within about two hours before or after training can effectively support recovery and muscle protein synthesis. The exact timing is less important than consistently meeting your daily protein target.
Before Bed
A protein-rich evening snack or shake can help support overnight muscle repair, particularly after a day of resistance training.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
For adults who regularly perform resistance training, many sports nutrition experts recommend approximately:
- 0.7–1.0 grams of protein per pound of goal or lean body weight per day, depending on training volume, age, and goals.
For example:
- 170-pound adult → approximately 120–170 grams per day
- 200-pound adult → approximately 140–200 grams per day
